Pastor David Jang: The Fall Caused by Pride and the Grace of Salvation

Following Pastor David Jang’s sermons on Genesis 3 and 4, this article explores humanity’s fall through pride and disobedience, Satan’s temptation, and the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer. It reflects on how Christ’s humility and obedience open the way to the gospel and the grace of salvation.

The title of Milton’s Paradise Lost reminds us that humanity lost far more than a beautiful garden. Whenever paradise collapses, the breakdown of relationship comes first, and at the heart of that breakdown lies the pride of a creature seeking to take the place of the Creator. Following Genesis 3 and 4, the sermon of Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, quietly illuminates where humanity’s fall began and how the grace of salvation restores the ancient wounds left behind by sin.

The world of Genesis 1 and 2 existed within the goodness and order of creation. God created the universe and all living things, and He made humanity in His own image. The tragedy of Genesis 3, therefore, did not occur because human beings were evil from the beginning. It began when those who had been created good turned away from God’s Word and established themselves as a new standard of truth. The fall was a corruption of what God had originally made good.

When this starting point is overlooked, sin is reduced to a simple mistake, and the gospel is weakened into advice for improving one’s life. But when we first behold the goodness of creation, we begin to understand both the depth of the destruction caused by the fall and the greatness of the love revealed in the cross of Jesus Christ. To face the reality of the fall is not to remain in despair. It is to discover how far the light of salvation has descended to reach us.

When Doubt Creeps In, the Word Begins to Waver

The serpent did not begin by openly denying God. Instead, he planted doubt in Eve’s heart by asking, “Did God really say that?” He then contradicted God’s warning, “You will surely die,” with the deceptive claim, “You will not surely die,” and promised that eating the forbidden fruit would make humanity like God. Satan’s strategy is not always to erase the Word completely. More often, he distorts its meaning so that it appears to agree with human desire.

Eve looked at the fruit, drew near to it, and eventually ate it. Curiosity led to approach, and approach led to action. Sin rarely appears in its completed form all at once. It grows quietly when we permit ourselves to trust our own judgment slightly more than God’s Word, or when we regard what attracts us as more important than the boundaries God has established.

After eating the fruit, Adam and Eve did not receive the freedom they had been promised. They became ashamed of their nakedness, covered themselves with fig leaves, and hid from the presence of God. Sin not only separates humanity from God; it also imprisons people within patterns of self-defense. It teaches us to create coverings rather than confess the truth, to hide rather than repent, and to exchange a relationship of love for a life ruled by fear.

Cain in Genesis 4 reveals how this self-centeredness expands into human relationships. Even an offering made to God can become distorted when personal preference and satisfaction take priority over God’s will. Faith then ceases to be a way of serving God and becomes a means of protecting the self.

Unable to examine his own heart after his offering was not accepted, Cain directed his anger toward Abel. The disobedience of Genesis 3 developed into the murder of a brother in Genesis 4. Sin does not remain confined within an individual. It produces dark fruit in relationships and communities.

For this reason, the fall cannot be read merely as the failure of one person in the distant past. Humanity is born under its influence and repeatedly reenacts the same patterns of doubt and self-centeredness. Scripture reveals the origin of sin in such depth not simply to condemn us, but to show why every human being needs the salvation found in Christ.

Pride Climbs Upward, but the Grace of the Gospel Comes Down

Pastor David Jang connects Isaiah 14, Ezekiel 28, and Revelation 12 in order to understand Satan’s essential character through pride and self-exaltation. A being created by God abandoned his proper place and attempted to become like the Most High. He then planted that same logic of rebellion within humanity.

The temptation that says, “You may become the standard of good and evil for yourself,” is not confined to a single scene in Genesis. It is repeated whenever human judgment and desire are placed above the Word of God.

Yet the Satan described in Scripture is not an equal rival to God. He is a created being who fell and for whom judgment has been prepared. This truth allows believers to recognize the reality of evil without becoming imprisoned by fear. The most important question is not merely what visible spiritual phenomena may be occurring, but whom my heart is exalting and whose will I accept as the final standard for my life.

The gospel opens a path directly opposite to Satan’s desire to rise. Philippians 2 presents Jesus as the One who emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient even to the point of death. Humanity attempted to become like God and lost life, but Christ descended to the lowest place and opened the way of salvation.

Pride is the movement of the heart that attempts to seize God’s place. Faith is the decision to return that place to God.

The grace of the cross does not merely make the proud self appear more respectable. It is salvation that changes the ruler of one’s life. Repentance, therefore, does not end with admitting a few visible mistakes. It brings into the light the heart that has treated personal judgment as absolute, the attitude that has interpreted Scripture according to personal desire, and even the hidden motive that has sought self-exaltation while appearing to serve God.

It is in this deepest place that the gospel calls humanity back to the way of humility and obedience.

In the Wilderness of Temptation, Faith Holds Fast to the Word

During the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, Satan appealed to physical hunger, public glory, and worldly power. Jesus, however, resisted every temptation through the Word of God. This scene reveals that the heart of spiritual warfare is not simply how strongly we control our emotions. The decisive issue is whose word we accept as the final truth.

Faith is not a peaceful state that becomes possible only after every desire has disappeared. Faith is obedience that regards God’s Word as more trustworthy than one’s own desires.

The suffering of Job reveals another dimension of temptation. Satan accused Job of fearing God only because his wealth and health had been protected. Yet even in suffering that he could not understand, Job did not curse God. The presence of temptation or suffering is not itself evidence that faith is absent. Rather, through such seasons, the reason we have loved God and the foundation upon which our trust has rested may be revealed.

This is why the petition in the Lord’s Prayer—“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”—is not a vague religious phrase. It is a confession asking God to protect us from the lies of the serpent and from the pride within our own hearts.

It is not simply a prayer for a life without temptation. It is a prayer that we will not lose hold of the truth when temptation comes. We ask God to help us step down from the place of mastery and choose His will, and to remain in His Word even when falsehood sounds attractive and convincing.

In Gethsemane, Jesus did not conceal His anguish, yet He sought the Father’s will above His own. Obedience does not mean the absence of struggle. It is the decision to follow God’s will even in the midst of conflict, sorrow, and pain.

For this reason, meditation on Scripture and prayer cannot be treated as ornaments of the Christian life. They are channels of grace through which the motives of the heart are revealed, seductive falsehood is distinguished from the voice of truth, and fragile human beings are raised up again.

The Lord’s Prayer Points Back to the True Lord of Salvation

This sermon warns against both excessive fear of Satan and careless disregard for his existence. Evil is real, and it seeks to exploit human weakness. Yet through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, its decisive defeat has already been revealed.

The believer’s struggle is not an attempt to create the possibility of victory through personal strength. It is the struggle to hold fast by faith to the victory the Lord has already accomplished and to live in its reality. Christians must therefore remain spiritually awake, but they have no reason to live under the dominion of fear.

This is not a path meant to be walked alone. Satan makes use of secrecy and isolation, but darkness is exposed when believers share their hearts within the community and pray for one another. Confessing the Lord’s Prayer together and encouraging one another through Scripture are more than expressions of personal closeness.

The Holy Spirit and the Word, prayer and fellowship, form a gracious order through which believers are delivered from self-centeredness and restored to a God-centered way of discernment.

Pastor David Jang’s biblical meditation emphasizes to the end that both the foundation and the manner of victory are found in Jesus. The fall that began with pride cannot be healed through greater self-confidence. The logic of evil begins to collapse when believers receive the mind of Christ—the One who humbled Himself, loved others, served them, and obeyed the will of God to the very end.

We cannot confess the name of Jesus while walking a path that contradicts the heart of Jesus.

The final confession of the Lord’s Prayer declares that the kingdom, the power, and the glory belong to the Father. This is not merely a sentence that concludes a prayer. It is a declaration of faith concerning the One to whom the throne of our lives must be returned.

The temptation to exalt ourselves still sounds appealing, but life is found on the path of Christ, who humbled Himself. In my words, decisions, and relationships, who establishes the final standard of good and evil? From what place must I step down so that I may once again receive God as the true Lord of my life?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
