Pastor David Jang: Resurrection Faith—Walking from Death into Life

Following Pastor David Jang’s sermon, this article reflects on Christ’s atoning death on the cross and the resurrection revealed through the empty tomb. It explores how resurrection faith enables individuals and the church to overcome sin, death, and fear and to live in love, life, and hope.

Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich examines the moment when death, long treated as something that happens to other people, suddenly becomes the most immediate reality in one man’s life. From a distance, death may seem like a philosophical subject. But when it stands at the door, it becomes a question that shakes every certainty and structure a person has built.

This is the very place to which the sermon of Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, directs our attention. To humanity imprisoned by the fear of death, the gospel does not come as vague consolation. It comes through the declaration of Jesus Christ: “I am the resurrection and the life.”

Hearing the Gospel of Resurrection Again at the Threshold of Death

The belief that science and medicine have made human life secure can quickly be shaken in the face of disaster and disease. Under ordinary circumstances, people regard death as something distant. Yet an unexpected crisis reveals that death is a personal reality from which no one can escape. At that moment, a profound desire to live rises from within the human heart, compelling us to ask again about the source of life. The sermon understands this as one of the reasons people turn to worship, the church, and the gospel in times of fear.

The words of John 11:25–26 do not deny the reality of death, but neither do they allow death to have the final word. The promise that the one who believes in Christ “will live, even though he dies” points to resurrection, while the declaration that whoever lives and believes in him will never truly die opens the way to eternal life.

At the center of Christian faith is not an optimistic belief that human beings can overcome death by their own strength. It is the conviction that the way of life is found in Christ, who conquered death. The empty tomb, therefore, is not a symbol that romanticizes loss. It is a sign of the gospel proclaiming that the conclusion once closed by death has been opened anew in God.

The sermon does not reduce the resurrection to psychological comfort or an inward fantasy. It holds firmly to the reality that Christ truly conquered death, as testified by the empty tomb and by the disciples who encountered the risen Jesus. Resurrection hope is therefore not an escape from reality. It is faith grounded in the truth that death does not possess ultimate authority.

Yet this message is not limited to consolation concerning what happens after physical death. Within the movement of the sermon, humanity is portrayed as having already lost the path of righteousness through sin and as moving toward death. The grace of resurrection comes as the power that brings this spiritually dead existence back to life. Sin and death are not separate problems, and their answer is found together in the cross and resurrection.

For the desire for life to become true hope, we must first look honestly at what has placed us under the dominion of death.

Grace Blossoming Through the Darkness of the Cross

Pastor David Jang emphasizes that the resurrection can be properly understood only when we first pass deeply through the meaning of the cross. Simply affirming that Jesus rose again is not enough to reach the full depth of resurrection faith. Only when we ask why he died and for whom he gave himself does the resurrection emerge not as a cheap language of victory, but as God’s saving act that gives life to sinners.

Romans 4:25 joins the cross and resurrection in a single sentence, declaring that Christ was delivered over because of our transgressions and was raised for our justification.

Before the declaration that “the wages of sin is death,” humanity is unable to pay the price of its own sin. The message of substitutionary atonement—that the sinless Jesus stood in the place of sinners and bore death on their behalf—shows that grace is not a lenient act that simply overlooks sin. At the cross, the justice that refuses to ignore the weight of sin and the love that willingly bears its punishment come together.

The fact that God gave his Son opens a profound theological insight: salvation does not begin with human merit or self-justification. It begins with mercy freely given to those who have no claim to deserve it.

Following the movement of Romans 5, the sermon explains that sin and death entered through one man, Adam, while righteousness and life were opened through another man, Jesus Christ. Christ’s death becomes “our death,” and his resurrection becomes “our life,” because he offered himself as the representative of humanity. Salvation, therefore, is not an event viewed from a distance. It is the reality experienced by those who, through faith, are united with Christ and receive his death and resurrection as the defining truth of their own existence.

Had the death of the cross been the final event, the gospel would have ended before the tomb. The resurrection confirms that Christ’s atoning death leads to life and proclaims that the powers of sin and death are not the ultimate victors.

As confessed in Galatians 2:20, when Christ’s death becomes the death of my old life and his resurrection becomes the beginning of a new life within me, faith moves beyond an abstract idea and changes the direction of my entire being. The cross is not complete without the resurrection, and the resurrection cannot be understood by erasing the cross. When the two are held together, awareness of sin does not collapse into despair, and grace does not become cheap consolation.

The Love That Ran Toward the Empty Tomb and Encountered Life

The first light of the resurrection morning falls upon the tears of Mary Magdalene. She went to the tomb, believing that everything had ended, and she refused to leave because of her love for the Lord. She was even prepared to take his body away herself. The sermon understands this devotion as a love stronger than death.

Only those who understand the depth of Christ’s suffering on the cross can receive the resurrection not as shallow celebration, but as the event in which love conquered death.

The empty tomb revealed that Mary’s love had not been in vain. Yet at first, she did not recognize the Lord who was already standing beside her. The question, “Woman, why are you weeping?” shows that the risen Christ was present in the very midst of her sorrow.

When tears become overwhelming, a person may fail to see the hope already present. When suffering becomes too deep, even the nearness of life may feel unfamiliar. True biblical meditation does not hastily erase sorrow. It listens again, from within that sorrow, for the voice of the living Lord calling us by name.

This scene also raises an important question about what truly keeps the church alive. A church may possess a magnificent building and a glorious history, yet if worshipers, love, and spiritual longing disappear, it may become a place that preserves the traces of the past rather than bearing witness to the living Lord.

The devotion that seeks to honor the body of the Lord is precious. Yet unless there is a love like that of Mary Magdalene—a love that seeks the Lord beyond the tomb—the life of the resurrection may never become a present reality. The power that renews the church does not begin with outward grandeur. It begins with the longing to encounter the Lord who has passed through death and risen into life.

Where Does Resurrection Faith Lead Our Lives Today?

The resurrection faith emphasized by Pastor David Jang does not remain a momentary emotion experienced on Easter Sunday or a doctrine to which one merely gives intellectual agreement. The belief that death is not the end is not a spell that instantly removes fear. It is a new center that prevents fear from becoming the ruler of our lives.

To confess that we live with the risen Lord is to step down from the place where we determine everything for ourselves. It is to receive love, sacrifice, service, and humble devotion as the new direction of life. For those who have seen eternal life, earthly loss and suffering can no longer be interpreted only as final destruction.

This faith also transforms the life of the community. The church must not merely be a place that explains the resurrection. It must become a community of life in which those who have fallen into despair learn hope again and those imprisoned by fear learn to choose love.

The sermon urges believers to continue meditating on the life and victory of the resurrection even after the Lenten contemplation of the cross has ended. This reminds us that faith must go deeper than the dates marked on the church calendar. Just as the disciples remained with the risen Lord, came to understand the Word anew, and prepared their next steps through prayer, the church today must not pass too quickly beyond the resurrection. It must remain in its truth until the power of resurrection becomes a daily habit of life.

The cross is the sign of a love stronger than death, and the resurrection is the event in which that love truly conquered death and opened the way of life. Resurrection faith, therefore, is not optimism that pretends death does not exist. It is hope that looks directly at sin, death, and tears, yet still believes that none of them can speak the final word.

The gospel does not claim that there is no tomb. It declares that the tomb can no longer hold Christ—or those who believe in him—forever.

There are places in our lives that appear to be endings. The weight of sin, the fear of death, tears and grief, and communities that seem to be losing their spiritual vitality may all feel like tombs. Yet the risen Lord does not come only after our tears have stopped. He comes to us while we are still weeping and opens the way of life beside us.

What am I declaring to be over too soon?

And is it possible that the risen Lord is already near, but my sorrow has become so great that I have not yet recognized him?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
