Pastor David Jang (Olivet University) on Romans 7: The Law and the Grace of the Gospel

Through Pastor David Jang’s sermon on Romans 7, reflect on how law and gospel, grace and repentance, and the obedience of faith lead us into true freedom.

In Franz Kafka’s Before the Law, a man spends his entire life standing before a doorway, yet never enters through it. The door appears to be open for him, but he never passes through it into the way of life. This brief yet unsettling story casts a lingering shadow over the way we read Romans 7.

The law is like a holy doorway set before humanity. It refuses to let sin remain hidden. It exposes the covetousness and self-righteousness buried deep within the heart and reveals the true condition of human beings standing before God. Yet no one can live merely by standing before the door. What gives life to sinners is not the declaration of the law, but the grace of the gospel opened to us in Christ.

In his sermon on Romans 7, Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, makes it clear that Paul was not attempting to abolish the law. Paul was not someone who treated the law lightly. He loved the law more deeply than most and earnestly sought to discover the will of God within it. Yet in Christ, Paul came to understand something decisive: the law is a holy mirror that reveals sin, but the power to justify the sinner belongs to the gospel.

Romans 7, therefore, is not a chapter that places law and grace in opposition to one another. Rather, it is a profound passage of Scripture that clearly distinguishes the proper place of the law from the saving power of the gospel.

The message of this chapter remains deeply relevant to the life of faith today. People often use the Word of God as a tool for confirming their own righteousness. Others speak of grace while dismissing the demands of God’s Word. Paul, however, presents neither of these paths. He affirms the holiness of the law while testifying that the power to save the sinner exposed by that law is found in Christ alone.

When this balance is preserved, Bible meditation does not remain trapped in moral instruction. It leads us more deeply into the heart of the gospel.

The Face of Sin Revealed in the Mirror

The law makes human beings uncomfortable because it exposes the hidden patterns of the heart. Covetousness, pride, disobedience, and self-righteousness may easily be disguised before other people, but they lose every hiding place before the Word of God.

When Paul confesses, “I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law,” he does not mean that the law is evil. On the contrary, his confession shows that the law is good and necessary.

The problem is not the law. The problem is humanity under the power of sin.

Through its commands—“You shall” and “You shall not”—the law reveals God’s holy standard. Yet before that standard, human beings discover their own inability. The Word is lofty and good, but a heart enslaved by sin cannot turn that good command into living obedience.

The law, therefore, was not given merely to imprison us in despair. It was given to awaken us to our need for the gospel.

Without the law, repentance becomes vague because sin no longer appears to be sin. Without the gospel, however, hope disappears because, although we may recognize our sin, we cannot find a way out of it.

The theological insight of Romans 7 shines most clearly within this tension: the law awakens us, while the gospel gives us life.

A mirror cannot wash the dirt from a person’s face, but it can reveal that the dirt is there. That recognition becomes the first step toward grace.

Repentance, in this sense, is not self-hatred. Repentance is the honest recognition of our true condition before the law, combined with faith that the way back to God has been opened through the gospel.

Knowing our sin is not the same as being imprisoned by guilt. The law exposes sin, but grace gives the sinner hope to rise again. Romans 7 is therefore not merely a chapter of despair. It is a passage of grace that leads us through despair and into the doorway of the gospel.

Crossing the Threshold of Condemnation into Grace

The analogy of marriage in Romans 7 is one of the most subtle elements in Paul’s argument. Paul explains that a married woman is bound to her husband while he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that bound her to him.

Through this analogy, Paul explains the believer’s new relationship with God.

The essential point is not that the law has died. Rather, the old self has died with Christ. A believer is not merely someone who has exchanged one set of rules for another. A believer is someone whose entire identity and belonging have changed.

This is where Pastor David Jang’s explanation carries particular force. The old self that once lived under the condemnation of the law has come to an end through the cross of Christ. Because Jesus Christ bore the penalty of sin in His body, the law can no longer hold the believer under the sentence of death.

This is not vague consolation. It is the real freedom given through the gospel of substitutionary atonement. Condemnation no longer has the final word. The grace of the cross has become the final word.

Yet this freedom must never be confused with self-indulgence. Grace is not permission to take sin lightly. It is the power that enables us to understand the weight of sin more deeply before the cross.

Those who understand costly grace do not speak casually about sin. A forgiven person does not become someone who excuses sin, but someone who moves toward deeper love and obedience. The gospel does not remain a form of psychological comfort that merely removes feelings of guilt. It sets us free from the power of sin so that we may live as those who belong to God.

Freedom, therefore, is not simply the absence of external rules. It is the discovery of a new Lord.

The old self was bound under sin and condemnation, but the new self belongs to Christ and is opened toward God. The gospel does not make human beings irresponsible. Instead, it calls them into the deepest form of responsibility: to love because they have been loved, to forgive because they have been forgiven, and to obey because they have received grace.

Bearing Fruit Through Love, Not Fear

Paul explains that we were made to die to the law so that we might “bear fruit for God.” The gospel does not stop at freeing us from guilt. Those who are united with Christ receive a new direction for their lives, and that transformation must eventually appear as fruit.

Salvation does not end with inward comfort. It leaves visible traces of new life in our relationships, words, and choices.

This fruit is not a religious achievement produced through human effort. Just as a branch bears fruit by remaining connected to the vine and receiving its life, a person of faith bears the fruit of love and obedience by abiding in Christ.

Under the law, fear moved the human heart. Under the gospel, grace becomes the motivating power.

Fear may restrain a person for a time, but love transforms a person from within.

Outwardly, the two kinds of life may appear similar. Both may speak of obedience, holiness, and righteous living. Their roots, however, are entirely different. One is a desperate effort to avoid condemnation. The other is a response to the love already received.

True obedience is not the product of fear. It is the joyful fruit borne by a soul that has received grace. Christian obedience, therefore, is not labor performed in order to prove one’s worth. It is the movement of gratitude through which we return to God, in the form of our lives, the love we have already received from Him.

Beyond the Law, into the Heart of the Law

The gospel does not destroy the law. Rather, it enables us to fulfill the divine intention toward which the law has always pointed.

The law says, “Do not murder,” but in the gospel, the Lord deals even with the root of hatred. The law says, “Do not commit adultery,” but the Lord brings even the desires of the heart into the light.

The life of the gospel is therefore not a life that demands less than the law. It is a life that goes deeper through the Holy Spirit.

Pastor David Jang emphasizes the importance of preserving this balance. Legalism imprisons people in condemnation and fear, while antinomianism turns grace into a cheap and empty word. Paul rejects both extremes.

The law is the holy standard that enables us to recognize sin, while the gospel is the power of God that delivers us from it. Those who know grace do not despise the law, and those who have despaired before the law cling even more earnestly to the gospel.

This distinction is equally important for the church and for individual believers today. The language of legalism may sometimes sound deeply devout, but hidden within it may be fear, comparison, exhaustion, and a constant need to prove oneself.

On the other hand, when people speak of grace while abandoning repentance and obedience, the gospel ceases to be the power that renews life and becomes a convenient excuse.

Romans 7 leads us away from both paths and brings us once again before the cross.

Romans 7 therefore asks us searching questions in our own meditation on Scripture. Are we still living under the standards of self-righteousness and condemnation? Or have we become insensitive to sin while continuing to speak of grace?

The freedom of the gospel is not a loose compromise between these two extremes. It is the way of new life in which we die with Christ and live again in Him.

The law awakens us, and grace raises us to our feet. Repentance deepens, faith becomes gentler, and love becomes tangible. In that place, obedience is no longer a burdensome duty but a joyful response to God.

The question left by Pastor David Jang’s sermon on Romans 7 is therefore this:

Am I still standing before the doorway of condemnation, or have I entered through the doorway of the gospel and begun to live a life that bears fruit for God?

When we enter through that door, faith is no longer an anxious waiting before the law. It becomes a living journey within the grace of the gospel—a journey in which we bear fruit for God.

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
