David Jang’s Sermon: No Condemnation and the Grace of Becoming God’s Children

Reflecting on Pastor David Jang’s sermon, this article explores the promise of no condemnation in Romans 8 and the grace of becoming God’s children. It traces the gospel journey in which faith’s struggle against sin leads through repentance and obedience in the Spirit to an unshakable hope of glory amid suffering.

Before dawn breaks, the human figure in Kafka’s The Trial walks beneath the shadow of an invisible court, accused of a crime he does not even understand. We, too, place ourselves before an inner tribunal whenever we fail, condemning ourselves again and again as though repeating a verdict that has already been handed down. Yet Romans 8, as emphasized in the sermons of Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, speaks an entirely different word into the heart of that darkness: there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

This declaration is not permission to treat sin lightly. Rather, it teaches those who fall while struggling against sin that the foundation of salvation lies not in their own degree of perfection but in the grace God has accomplished. This is also why the “therefore” of Romans 8 follows the lament of Romans 7. The life of faith is not a life without failure. It is a life that holds fast to the gospel so that failure can never become the final verdict.

Gospel Dawn Breaking Through the Night of Condemnation

When people become aware of their sin, they find themselves standing before two paths. One is the path of repentance, in which they hate their sin and return to God. The other is the path of remaining in the darkness of condemnation, having given up on themselves. Paul did not conceal the contradiction within him: in his heart he delighted in God’s law, yet in his flesh he served the law of sin. His lament, however, did not end in despair. It led to a new verdict opened in Christ.

The fact that Paul begins Romans 8 not with “but” but with “therefore” contains a profound theological insight. He is not erasing the failures described earlier and beginning an entirely different story. Instead, he calls believers to remember the foundation of salvation already given to them precisely in the place of failure. The gospel does not avoid human contradiction. It establishes the certainty of grace in the very midst of it. Sanctification, therefore, is not an anxious process of proving oneself but a lifelong obedience offered in response to a love that has already been given.

The word “now” in the declaration that there is no condemnation reveals the continuing time of grace. This promise is not valid only at the moment a person first believes. It is a truth that sustains believers throughout the entire process of sanctification as they struggle against sin, fall, and rise again. No condemnation does not cancel sanctification; it is the foundation that makes sanctification possible. When people possess assurance of salvation, they can bring their sins into the light rather than hiding them, and they can look upon God’s love as greater than their failures.

To be “in Christ” is not a vague religious feeling but a union of love. The declaration that the law of the Spirit of life has set us free from the law of sin and death does not mean that human determination has simply become stronger. It means that a new reign has begun through the cross and resurrection. What the law could not accomplish because of the weakness of the flesh, God accomplished through His Son. Grace does not pretend that sin does not exist, but neither does it allow sin to become the whole identity of a person.

When the Breath of the Spirit Drives Out the Old Life

Romans 8 draws a sharp contrast between the mind governed by the flesh and the mind governed by the Spirit. The mind of the flesh inclines toward death, while the mind that follows the Spirit moves toward life and peace. Here, “the flesh” does not simply mean the physical body. It refers to the sinful nature that rebels against God. The struggle of faith goes beyond improving outward appearances. It deepens into an inward obedience that determines what will be permitted to rule the heart.

The words, “If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live,” also reveal the manner of sanctification. Sinful habits cannot be broken merely through self-discipline or a display of willpower. They must be confronted in the power of the Holy Spirit that comes from above. Pastor David Jang emphasizes the biblical movement that calls believers to fight boldly in the Spirit rather than becoming powerless because of fear of sin and feelings of condemnation. Repentance is not a payment made to regain salvation. It is the response of a person who already stands within grace and turns away from the old path.

Condemnation and repentance both look at sin, but they lead a person in opposite directions. Condemnation whispers, “You are finished,” and causes the sinner to hide from God. Repentance awakened by the Holy Spirit clearly acknowledges sin, yet leads the sinner back to the Father. True repentance, therefore, is not a monologue of self-hatred. It is a prayer that begins speaking to God again. Holiness does not belong only to those who never fall. The person who turns toward the light of the gospel whenever they fall is walking on the path of transformation.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not a distant ideal to be attained someday. It is a present reality that moves the believer’s life now. Because the Spirit who will give life even to our mortal bodies dwells within us, present weakness cannot determine future defeat. A believer is not someone from whom temptation has disappeared, but someone who no longer needs to serve temptation as a master. Within this freedom, love becomes obedience, and obedience once again opens the way of life and peace.

From Slaves of Fear to Beloved Children

The gospel does not stop with the forgiveness of sins. It moves toward a transformation of identity. Those who are led by the Spirit of God are no longer slaves bound again by fear; they are children of God. Salvation is not merely an escape from punishment. It is the restoration of a relationship in which those who were once unable to call God their Father can now cry, “Abba, Father.” The ability to call upon this name is one of the deepest freedoms a human being can receive.

The image of adoption explained in the sermon makes this freedom even clearer. Just as a son accepted into a new household is released from the debts and claims of his former life and receives the same standing as a natural-born child, those who are in Christ are transferred from their former status under sin and death. The witness to this transformation is not our fluctuating emotions but the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. Because the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children, faith is not a form of self-assurance sustained only on days when our feelings are bright.

The name “child” carries both privilege and responsibility. God’s children are His heirs and co-heirs with Christ, yet they are called to share not only in His glory but also in His sufferings. The cry “Abba, Father” is not merely a word of relief spoken when life feels safe. It is the language of love that enables us to trust and obey the Father’s will even in our heaviest moments.

This identity also enters into the ordinary choices of daily life. When fear arises, the direction of our lives depends on whether we calculate the cost like slaves or trust the Father’s will like children. The assurance of being loved does not produce recklessness. It produces responsible obedience. The promise of an inheritance keeps us from wasting the present carelessly. As children wait for their inheritance, they learn the Father’s heart in the places where they stand today.

The heart of a slave fears that even a small failure will sever the relationship. The faith of a child, however, does not lose sight of whom it belongs to, even amid discipline and hardship. This is why the sermon brings together no condemnation and adoption as one continuous movement. The assurance of forgiveness does not make us irresponsible. It gives us the courage to become more like the Father whose love has received us.

Hope Opening Beyond the Shadow of Suffering

The identity of being God’s children does not erase the reality of suffering. Those who follow the way of Christ do not turn away from the weight of the cross. In the trials of life, they are led to ask more deeply who they are. Yet suffering is no longer evidence that they have been abandoned. In the Holy Spirit, it becomes part of the process through which they are conformed to Christ and learn to look toward the glory that will be revealed.

For this reason, there is no need to romanticize suffering or pretend to be strong in its presence. The hope of Romans 8 does not arise from denying tears. It arises from the truth that the Spirit’s testimony does not cease even in the midst of groaning. When believers know that their present pain is not the final scene, they can acknowledge their wounds without surrendering their future to them. Hope is not a gaze that ignores reality. It is the endurance that looks beyond present reality toward its promised completion.

The movement of the passage shows that justification, sanctification, and glorification are not disconnected fragments. Those who have already been justified are now being transformed in the Spirit and look forward to the final glory of resurrection. Present weakness, therefore, is not proof that salvation is false. It is a sign that we are still walking toward completion. The joy of the gospel is not a life without wounds, but the freedom to walk again within a love deeper than every wound.

Pastor David Jang’s meditation on Scripture ultimately leads us toward an identity deeper than self-confidence. I did not become God’s child because I was without sin. Rather, because I have been accepted in Christ, I can fight against sin. I do not hope because suffering is light, but because the Father’s love is unshakable, I can wait. The grace of no condemnation still calls us today to the place of repentance and obedience.

Am I now holding on to my failure and remaining in the courtroom of my own heart? Or am I crying, “Abba, Father,” and stepping once again onto the path of life and peace?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
